What I am pointing out is that Mike Hubbard and his minions were at the helm. They ran a typical trash, relatively Limbaughfied, and utterly simplistic campaign. Sure, Dems had held the reins for 136 years. It’s just that they were almost always aligned with our Big Mules. It was the Bourbon, Redeemer, Big Mule Alliance types who generally had control of Goat Hill. Mike Hubbard and his bunch were just going to wet their beaks while servicing those same interests. And if you believed otherwise, bless your heart. I’m aware that Bill and probably plenty more want to keep this idea that plenty of ‘reasonable Republicans’ were around back then. I just don’t recall all that many speaking up against well over a decade already of Limbaugh, Tea Party foolishness, etc. That’s because the cancerous rot manifested now in ‘Trumpism’ is decades old. Terror over the reaction of ‘the base’ is decades old! Denying this stubborn reality is I suppose useful even now for careers and positions inside or adjacent to the GOP, establishment quarters, etc. However, it’s the wrong answer and won’t be part of any ultimate solution.

A lot of this goes back to Bob Riley’s failed Amendment 1 in 2003 when the religious anti-government nuts in the @algop went after Riley. Now to get elected in Alabama is profess ones love of God, Guns and hatred of Government… These could be called “Yellow Dog Republicans”
