Ooh - my new paper on case study is out! What’s a case study, how do you do one, how do you spot a good one? Includes niche examples like the REF impact case study (though it’s mainly about research case studies).

Three graphics side by side showing the symptoms of each stage of dementia.

In the first graphic, central text on a pale blue background reads: 'The early stage of dementia could look like'. This is surrounded by text reading: 'Changes in mood or emotions; Getting lost; Difficulty thinking things through and planning; Problems communicating; Problems with perception or judging distances; Memory problems.' Each piece of text is accompanied by a graphic illustrating the symptom.

In the second graphic, central text on a pale yellow background reads: 'The middle stage of dementia could look like'. This is surrounded by text reading: 'Memory problems getting worse; Delusions and paranoia; Getting confused about time and place; Hallucinations; More problems with speech and language; Apathy, depression and anxiety.' Each piece of text is accompanied by a graphic illustrating the symptom.

In the third graphic, central text on a pale blue background reads: 'The later stage of dementia could look like'. This is surrounded by text reading: 'Time shifting; Loss of verbal communication; Needing help with eating; Aggressive behaviour from feeling scared, threatened or confused; Difficulties with mobility; Difficulties recognising people.' Each piece of text is accompanied by a graphic illustrating the symptom.

Dementia affects everyone differently, however it can be helpful to think of it progressing in 'three stages'.

This is our guide to the common symptoms at each stage, but everyone’s dementia journey is different and if you need more help or advice we’re here for you.

Sobering food for thought: β€œ..SLPs..may not possess the knowledge necessary to adequately inform patients about the health outcomes associated with MTDs”. If we don’t know or communicate adequate information about MTDs to our patients, we are unable to fulfil our duty to obtain informed consent.
