He often said freedom isn’t free. He lost friends on the front lines of Afghanistan. Alex Pretti stood up for those ideals. Defense of our constitution. The home of the brave and the land of the free.

This is not the America he died for.

My friend voted for Trump. I know if he was alive today, he would be outraged and disgusted by the murder of Alex Pretti. It is a disgrace to his sacrifice and the sacrifice of the bravest amongst us.

ICU nurses in VA hospitals spend their lives caring for our warriors, who give their lives to defend our freedom.

They made him comfortable. Changed the TV channels for him. Spoke kind words when he was afraid. I didn’t cry in front of my friend. I cried on my knees in the hallway outside.

It was the ICU nurses that comforted me. It was the ICU nurses that helped us prepare for the end.

I was with him in the days before he died in the VA ICU ward. Unless you have experienced it, you will not know the role ICU nurses play in end of life care for wounded veterans.

One of my best friends was a US veteran who died in 2023 at a VA hospital in the ICU. He was 40 years old and sustained injuries in his tour that caused long-term complications that eventually led to his death.

Alex Jeffrey Pretti was an ICU nurse at a VA hospital. His life, through his profession, was dedicated to serving his community and our country.

As so many have now seen on video, his final act before he was killed by federal agents was doing everything in his power to protect his community.
