Last week we practiced possession in Spanish 2 (girl’s desk -> desk of the girl) via a slideshow of prompts and mini whiteboards and I said β€œkeep track of your points!” They were SO FOCUSED. Then winners at each table relaxed while others put away supplies…everyone REALLY won in language learning πŸ˜‚

Truly amazing how much β€œhey guys here’s a new GAME!” can make them eagerly and competitively do a worksheet or strenuous task. Best classroom magic I’ve found yet

just did a slightly-simplified-points version of this game today with my Spanish 3s to review our story!! Such great output practice

I do not have one for out loud usage, but almost all assignments from week 1 onward in all levels require written TL usage (with scaffolded questions and many posters to support). Weirdly, my students end up great at writing and not great at speaking πŸ™ƒ

I would read ANY of those books based on those lines alone! (Also online1roomschoolhouse on Instagram made a series of β€œfirst lines of children’s books” videos that had similar vibes to these, and I think you two would be friends)

So in the cafeteria, we placed a basket to collect sealed/unopened snack items and uneaten fruit.

At the end of the lunch period the lunch monitors move the food another basket that is centrally located where students may come down to grab items for their snack (or to take home).

The thing about the relentless march of time is that you only get an ending (happy or otherwise) in fiction. Here in the real world no cause is ever lost forever even though we may not live to see it prevail. This is both hope and cautionary tale.

Hey institutions that host professional development, podcasts, ed news, ed conferences, etc:

Educators are desperate to hear from other educators about what’s working in their classrooms TODAY. Find the practicing educators and give them resources to teach other educators.

One exchange in the books has stuck with me deeply:

"Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That's what sin is."

"It's a lot more complicated than that-"

Even if you aren’t masking anywhere else it still makes sense to wear a mask in medical settings & pharmacies because there’s a greater chance of being close to someone contagious & there are more people who are at higher risk in these places. Masking in these settings both protects you & others.

Agreed! So much more room for language input and exploration, and less time/space spent on behavior management. I’m really excited for AP; first year teaching it and I’ve had 6/10 of the kids in my classes previously!

Last year was Spanish 2 (29, 29, 26, 17) and Spanish 4 (10, 13).

This year I have Spanish 2 (25, 20), Spanish 3 (22, 20, 21) and AP (10). Definitely a pleasant change from last year!

Nothing’s Going to Change My Mind: How Unconditional Positive Regard Transforms Classrooms What if students didn't have to do anything to earn our care?

"Unconditional positive regard means I care about you, you have value, you don’t have to do anything to prove it to me, and nothing will change my mind" - @asv.bsky.social

If nothing else, this. For our classrooms. For our schools.

Sometimes you have to make a point of arguing. Not to change the bigot's mind, because you won't.

You argue because you don't know who's listening, who's internalising, who's gauging their safety around you.

Make it clear that you're safe. Even if you don't know who you're being safe for.

I have personal experience with 1 because I’m a liberal who has lived all my life in a red state. I am telling you that everyone I know and love is affected if you decide red states aren’t worth protecting. It is not that simple.

03.07.2025 14:11 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The issue with that statement is (1) not every person living in red districts voted for their legislator and many are working hard against this bill and (2) every human deserves basic rights, even if you don’t agree with the person. Don’t stoop to their level.
