Not to gatekeep, but I don’t think it’s genuine to try to drag edge cases into shoplifting, to paint everyone who ever pulled a candy bar as El Chapo.

I don’t justify shoplifting. But there’s a reason why it’s a distinct type of theft. It’s arguably harmless and usually committed by people who are not involved in other types of criminal activity. The thing that drives them might be boredom or exploration of limits. It’s a mischief at most.

To make it lucrative, it would have to overtake other means of earning money per hour. People don't shoplift to make a living apart from some extreme cases. Even if they do, I bet some minimum wage job would be a much more stable alternative with way less work and way less stress.

This story fits the argument. But if the man in the story would have attacked someone with a knife it would be not because he's a shoplifter, but because he's an addict with a potential alternative to go through withdrawal, if he had been detained.

The article you linked says nothing about what shoplifters get from the activity, it only mentions damage to businesses. I don't think that the 24 mars bars ended up being sold to fund some criminal organization.
