Since when do the rules matter in your country? It seems they bend at will these days?

@tastinghistory.bsky.social about the Simnel Cake, which version is better? The one from the video or the one in your book? There are some slight differences in the recipe and the baking times (2h v. 1h).

But I still don't like Capitalism. It's not really a system that is meant to have controls. Controls are antithetical to the free market. What is capitalism called when it has strict guardrails, fair practices, and social justice?

Not sure we needed it. Humans are adaptable, so we found something very useful and decided life was better with than without, & no desire to go back, so it became a need. A lot of things are reciprocal that way. Social democracy is what enables socialism-like entities to co-exist with markets

It's only been high viz for 10 months. Your country's 60-year regression has been mounting for 60 years. Racism and misogyny are the gears of the machine on which the US runs.

What? How far away from the news have I been that i didn't know this?!!

I was going to jump in to say that. Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion never meant unqualified ppl getting positions they didn't deserve (DT's admin is a poster for that, which had nothing to do with DEI and everything to do with white supremacy, Christofascism, and greed).

Gonna pat myself on the back a little, Tom. I wasn't sure how much I knew about US Constitutional History (Canadian in Ontario).

That's really confusing. I guess they mean Libertarian/Neo-Liberal, which means conservative and not useful. Is it the same in UK? I think their Labour = Canadian Liberal. For us, Liberal is centrist/dithering, New Democrat is Left (tho less now than before), Green is...Green. Cons replaced w/ 🍁MAGA

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the EC have to do with conceding something to racist small states who didn't want progressive large states deciding elections? Haven't US leaders been conceding small wins to that demographic forever?

I'm confused about what Liberal means in AU. Is that your right-wing party? What you all need is a solid Aussie version of Jacinda Ardern (TBH, I think we all need that).

Please, no one wreck Nespresso for me. I haven't been to Sbux since I got a machine. I don't miss their flat white. Mine is better. And I certainly don't miss paying almost $6 CDN for it. Pay fair wages, #starbucks!

I was fresh out of high school in Canada. We watch your politics bc it deeply affects ours. I remember Al Gore was well on track to win, and "hanging chads" in Florida (Jeb Bush's state) decided the race. Not that I ever had much faith in the US system, but it has dwindled yearly since.

Not hard to believe at all. Carney is the kind of Progressive Conservative the regular PC voter was looking for as an alternative to the Libs left lean (which I was all for, BTW). I voted for 2025 Joe Clark, too, but not because I wanted to. There was no choice.

millions will stick with him if only to prevent a CPC takeover. Never mind the threats from outside, the threats are inside, too. Absolutely the Greens and NDP need to find a way to pick a leader everyone wants to vote for.

To me, that's what Capitalism is. The free market will always exploit whomever it needs to exploit to maximise profits. The reason ppl think competition is the only thing that breeds innovation is bc they have been told competition is the only way. Necessity has always been the mother of invention

Also, what? Films aren't about messaging? Is he sure about that? Watch the villain-du-jour throughout the history of film. It's always telling us who the bad guy in the world is or will be. At one time, it was always Russia, then "terrorists," now... well, I guess that depends who's making the movie

Furthermore, Maguire's novel on which Wicked is *very loosely* based uses Oz to dissect a lot of problematic systemsβ€”authoritarianism, othering and vilifying the othered, religion, etc.β€”so a critique of race and white privilege is an appropriate reading.

First-wave... That's the late 1800s, BTW.

Except that it can totally be read as a critique of white feminism. That critique is more than 20 years old! "First-wave feminism focused on the right of white women to the exclusion of the concerns of women from other racioethnic backgrounds" (Tong & Botts, 2017, p. 106). So, Wicked could be that.

The EC is one where I get the *intent* to prevent the large pops of one state from deciding for the rest of your country, but it really isn't fair. If 1 person = 1 vote, then popular vote should be the will of the people. Meanwhile in Canada, I keep hoping for Proportional Representation.

I'm not fully aware. What did Spotify do? I don't know what options exist. Also in Canada.

For all its awfulness, a streaming platform has advantages over music on CDs etc. I have discovered so many more artists I would know if I only used discs. Don't get me wrong; I still hate that I don't own my movies and music, but I like the availability and convenience of streaming.

Ok, I'll give you your endless optimism about the intent behind your founders. I maintain that it was flawed from the start, and the course correction wasn't continued amendments to modernise. The course correction would have been avoiding capitalism. They exchanged monarchy for monopoly.

And I also feel like heroin and other terrible narcotics are hurting vulnerable people whilst cocaine is mostly for rich people. I wonder if these wacky politicians realise the hundreds of millions of rich people whose parties were ruined. (<--sarcasm. I am not downplaying drug addiction).

10 kilos of blow? That's not very much... or it doesn't seem so. There are drug trafficking dhows in the Indian Ocean with hundreds of kilos of heroin (occasionally over 1,200 kg). That seems like a more significant thing to focus on...
