You may have seen that our office announced today that Ezekiel Kelly has entered a guilty plea for the September 7th, 2022 mass shooting that left three people dead and three others wounded.

Kelly will serve 3 life sentences plus more than 200 additional years.

A follower asked that I define this word that we hear often in nationally significant court cases. However, even if we don't hear it, precedent is always quietly at play in local and state-level decisions.

As the definition says, precedent is not ironclad.

Even if you’ve never come into direct contact with the system, you may at some point, and it helps to have a working knowledge of common legal terms.

Yesterday, I was joined by law enforcement to announce that a 3-judge panel ruled in favor of our office’s efforts to fight illegal gambling devices.

Since summer of 2022, we have seized more than 268 machines, $1 million in cash, and found ties to firearms and suspected money laundering.

Here are some more thoughts about jury duty. Some people don’t mind so much showing up, but they don’t want to be seated.

We often see jury selection depicted in media where a person expresses some issue with serving, and they’re dismissed.

But in reality, it’s not that easy.

Monday, June 23rd, the Shelby County Commission will vote on funding for a focused crime lab in Shelby County.

We need your help.

Please email your county commissioner and respectfully ask them to fund the lab so we can increase the solve rate of crimes and hold offenders accountable.

Two legal terms you are probably hearing more often are "Due Process" and "Habeas Corpus."

These are foundational principles in the law that cannot be ignored. A failure to provide it has the potential to deny an innocent person their freedom or allow a guilty person to go free.

“Clemency," "commute," and "pardon" have been in the news frequently, but some people confused.

Clemency is the umbrella term for any act of mercy by the executive of a state or the country.

Commutations, pardons, and exonerations are types of clemency that may be granted.

Randy Johnson was found guilty in the murder of Jazmin Jones in 2023. Johnson shot Jones in her driveway and tampered with evidence.

A 19-year-old man tied to car thefts in Nashville and Memphis is being held on a $500K bond after our team argued he poses a continued threat to public safety.

Bryun Watkins is charged with theft of property over $60K and vandalism after police say he stole a RAM TRX truck from Memphis on May 9.

Today, I joined Mayor Lee Harris in asking the Shelby County Commission to provide $5.5 million in recurring funding for a focused crime lab. I want to thank Mayor Harris for his support and the County Commission for their interest in the facility.
