In State
on the occasion of Donald J. Trump’s Second Inauguration
America is lying in state today,
laid bare in this consecrated place
where she fought against her ravaging
four years ago, where she cried
and shook through her death throes,
as we turned away, away,
and, again, away. Here, the fury
of a jilted man caught the wind,
as it always does, and poisoned
our nation’s imagination,
until we could no longer see
what we know we all saw.
America is lying in state today,
in this sacred place of the people
where past commanders rested,
laid out under the guard
of a flag bowing in gratitude,
under the watch of a nation in grief.
Today, the remains of America
are laid before us, here in the Rotunda,
at the feet of a flaccid man beholden
to the spectacle of pomp without circumstance,
of a lowered flag ordered to stand
without consent and without respect, at full mast.
Together, we mourn our beloved stars
and stripes, limp and shuddering, sad
witness to this day’s blustering death rattle.

Today seems an appropriate time to make my first post here. “In State,” a poem written for this sad day in our nation’s history.
