Deux ans plus tard, le World mosquito program faisait son apparition sur le Caillou.   Depuis, les résultats sont probants. La Nouvelle-Calédonie enregistre sa cinquième année consécutive sans épidémie de dengue. Une réalité rendue possible grâce aux nombreux lâchers de moustiques porteurs de la bactérie Wolbachia.   "Cette bactérie se transmet de génération en génération de moustiques et les empêche de transmettre le virus de la dengue", explique Sébastien Mabon, Directeur adjoint des affaires sanitaires et sociales de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (Dass). Fin des campagnes Wolbachia "Depuis le 1er janvier 2025, on n'a aucun cas de dengue. En 2024, on a recensé neuf cas. Sur ces cas, trois étaient des dengues locales et six concernaient des voyageurs qui l'avaient attrapée dans un autre pays avant d'arriver sur le territoire", poursuit le directeur adjoint. C'est pourquoi le projet Wolbachia prend fin, ou tout du moins le déploiement de nouveaux moustiques Wolbachia.   "Il n'est plus nécessaire de poursuivre le projet sur le territoire car le but initial a été atteint. Par contre, ce qui ne s'arrêtera pas, c'est la surveillance qu'on continue à faire du nombre de moustiques porteurs de la  bactérie, pour être sûr que le programme fonctionne toujours en Nouvelle-Calédonie." Rester vigilant La Dass insiste, le moustique Wolbachia n'empêche pas les piqûres. Les gestes de prévention sont donc de mise.
