The article says “it seems clear that Microsoft will not reverse course on the Microsoft account requirement due to negative user feedback.” Also MS implies they can’t make things work if local accounts are created. How arrogant and disingenuous. I’m glad I switched to a different OS last year.

Temps will be much cooler Monday in central #Iowa than they have been for the past several days. Normal highs in #DesMoines during this week are in the mid 60s and normal lows are in the mid 40s. For the latest official NWS forecast refer to weather.gov.

Injuries especially on the defensive side likely have at least something to do with it.

IMO it’s akin to people who criticize severe weather watches and warnings apparently because the weather didn’t occur at their exact location, even if it hit just a couple miles away. Similar thing with outdoor warning sirens.

Happy fall! The autumnal equinox occurred today at 119 pm CDT. It is the beginning of astronomical fall. Day and night are nearly equal everywhere. We also lose daylight at the greatest rate. Des Moines, IA, loses 2.8 mins per day. The losses increase with increasing latitude.

If they offer it for 40% off on Saturdays like they do for the rest of their pizzas then I would be interested. 🙂

We are now in the season of second summer in Iowa. On a serious note, much above normal temps will continue through Tuesday. Cooler temps will overspread the state from Wednesday through Friday. Normal high temps in Des Moines this week are in the middle 70s.

Did you know? The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO, and the 801 Grand building in Des Moines, IA, share a key feature. They are both 630 ft tall. In addition, the Gateway Arch is just as wide as it is tall. Also, the company that designed 801 Grand is headquartered in St. Louis.

9/11/2001 forever changed our country. The heroic actions of many people helped prevent the loss of life from being higher. Life may change forever in a single moment. Never take one second of your life for granted. Be sure to tell the ones you love that you love them. We shall never forget.

All these companies had to do was allow customers to opt in or out, rather than doing what they did and then trying to weasel out via technicalities. I’m confident they knew better but decided not to ask. Maybe adding a few zeroes to the fines would help deter such behavior in the future.

Many companies have justified their higher prices by saying their expenses have risen much more than average inflation. Everything (or a lot of things) cannot be above average, especially without many lower than average numbers elsewhere to compensate. Something doesn’t add up. 🤔

Here's a little bit of Des Moines history. The first picture is looking north on Merle Hay Rd, north of University Ave, in 1934. The second pic is the current Google Street View of that area today. The third image is a Google satellite view of the same area today too. Things have certainly changed!

If it’s truly that big of a deal to them then they should reduce their exposure to the risk by moving away from the coast or something similar. It’s difficult to have patience with people who complain when there are concrete ways to address the issues about which they are complaining.

When I get those questions and concerns I normally mention that another option is for them to follow the NWS on social media. I tell them by doing so they are getting the latest information directly from the horse’s mouth. Most people appreciate being told about that option and some do it.

Were you one of the people calling us to ask when the rain would arrive and end? 😊 We have been receiving a lot of calls from that part of the state to that effect over the past several days.

Agreed. A few days ago there was a lightning strike here which was 60 miles away from the parent storm. Such things are admittedly rare but they do happen. It also highlights the potential perils of assuming people are safe even if lightning is “in the distance.” Many of us know what assuming does.

The NWS has issued 3,170 flash flood warnings nationwide thus far for 2025 (thru 7/17). This total ranks #1 for the number of NWS flash flood warnings issued YTD for each year since 1986. Here is a running count of NWS flash flood warnings issued YTD each year since 1986.

Near the article’s end, the map’s caption says TX has “far more” flood-related deaths than any other state. TX’s land area and population ranks in the lower 48 are #1 and #2 respectively. Normalizing the counts by state land area or population would provide more scientific and fair comparisons.

I remember that slide from my training many years ago. Re the last point, many people continue to emphasize tors/other svr wx over flooding, despite data showing that flooding accounts for more deaths, damage, property loss, etc., on avg than tors/hail/wind. I wish people would "follow the data."
