But in the beginning every operator of rails, electricity and whatnot had their own "standard", incompatible with others. That wasn't really feasible and was ultimately changed to open, albeit regulated, standards.

I ultimately think something like Mastodon will prevail over proprietary networks controlled by single ruler (as happened with railroads, electricity, radio, internet and everything else), but well see
