30.09.2025 13:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For info - if you are sending me DMs I canβt read them because Bluesky wants me to confirm my age via face scan. I refuse to do this. If you want to contact me directly I still have access to Twitter (ew) direct messaging.
30.09.2025 13:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yup! Thatβs why we call it a βgrinderβ reading. The classic thought experiment is you can put something through the meat grinder and refer to its constituent βstuffβ.
Thereβs dog/elephant/lion/donkey/apple/mango/boy all over the wall.
Genuine question: what do you get from commenting this?
Iβm out here, bringing some fun linguistic research out of the ivory tower of academia, and all you care about is the grammar of the post?
I donβt care for the distinction in everyday language, and Bluesky is not my thesis.
Want to know more, and see how this plays out in other languages?

Linguistics in the wild on Reddit!
This phenomena comes under the general study of nominal flexibility. Often referred to as βgrindingβ, when a singular count noun in English has no article (a), this leads to a βstuffβ reading. Compare (1), which is grammatical:

I did it, I actually bloody did it
You'd have said it was a stupid idea to research and write a book in four months, with a twenty-six chapters and a ticking clock
And you'd be right, it was a stupid idea
But I did it anyway
And just like that, #lagb2024 is over! Iβve met some old friends and made some new ones. As always, LAGB is the nicest conference around. Everybody wants you to succeed.
Also, I learned some cool new things, my personal favourite about Greek gender agreement patterns :D
Iβm at #LAGB this week and today I learnt about Sinhala phonology and French gender inclusive doublets and how βphonemic fluctuationβ is not a thing (thanks racism) and that you canβt necessarily grind all nouns into gross flesh and people in Whalsey use fancy prepositions and I ate too many crisps

Welsh and Arabic are a great combination of two very unrelated languages that are in a number of ways surprisingly similar!
Iβm hoping so!!
