A very wise article, something to circulate to all students at school, I think. (And the new Skunk Anansie album is playing now.)

David Wake | ZSA: The People Who are you, and what do you do? What do you like to do outside of work? I’m David Wake, an β€œeclectic” writer; which means a) I use…

My interview with ZSA, the makers of the Ergodox keyboard, has just been published. Here's a link: people.zsa.io/david-wake/. (Maybe I should use that image as a new author picture.)

How many books is it reasonable, do you think, to launch at a single event? #writing #publishing. I'm writing four at the moment (which is dumb), and a couple might reach the end of the conveyor belt at the same time.

Printer's key - Wikipedia

I've had two books I've updated rejected because the edition number doesn't match the interior. I think they're spotting the print key (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printer...) and not understanding. But a printing makes no sense with print-on-demand, so a 'POD key' instead, maybe? Any ideas? #pod

I was watching Star Trek: Voyager.
β€œComputer,” Captain Janeway said, β€œanalyse the genetic markers and search Earth’s fossil record. Identify any ancestors common to both humans and the alien in sickbay.”
β€œI’m sorry I can’t help you with that,” said my Echo Dot.
Ah, to be living in the future.

Maybe I should do a list of ten readers who have read more than five of my books.

Surely you've read five or more of mine :–)

David Wake – Author Science-Fiction, Steampunk, Comedy and More...

I've written about #writing and #biscuits across at my website (and nibbled a malted milk). So, if you have a ginger nut after writing, then perhaps you shouldn't. davidwake.wordpress.com/blog/

Gary ran a role-playing game at the UK Expo games convention with an adventure based on my Derring-Do Club series. I popped in to say, "Hi", only for us to be held up at gunpoint as guards being captured. It was quite weird seeing my characters up to things without having to do any typing.

The Battlestar Galactica reboot – of course. Are we allowed ten?

Might as well cut out the middle man, the publisher, and self-publish. ;–)

Watchmen the TV series – must watch.

Doctor Who (with a few recent ones skipped).
Timeslip.
Blake's 7.
Twin Peaks.
The Expanse (worth a punt, supposed to be good, although maybe that one should be Watchmen).

The trouble with this is that favourite shows are already watched to death.

This is easy if you are writing a fantasy; half the unique words are made up. #writing.

While I'm on the general subject of "AI," let me just say that it's a real dickheaded maneuver to tell an actual artist that their work "looks like AI." Their work doesn't look like "AI" because they're aping what "AI" does; it looks like "AI" because the "AI" company fucking stole from them.

Only if they can solve it... however, point taken. Probably the best answer is to put it where it's funniest.

I have been listing the rules, breaking them and so forth. It's a single gag, a footnote to say, 'All the clues have been revealed, can you solve it now or do you need a hint?' But where to put it?

11.05.2025 15:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

From a technical standpoint, it has to be 3/4 as the resolution, Act III, is when the hero knows what to do, gets everyone to the drawing room and begins their PowerPoint, and then we get the car chase and shootout. I was hoping someone knew something similar to Ronald Knox's decalogue of rules.

11.05.2025 10:11 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Right up to the chapter before the reveal rather ruins a gag I've been working on. Ah well.

10.05.2025 12:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, but at what point should they all (or enough) have been snuck in?

Aristotle said that an ending should be inevitable, but unexpected. One of Agatha Christie's rules and of the golden age was to play fair. Of course. And having a clue revealed just before the dΓ©nouement is cheating. So, enough clues for a Holmes or Poirot by 75%... 50%...?

Then he's using AI to put humans, who make mistakes, out of work.

And some of us humans get great satisfaction from making mistakes and don't want this taken away from us by AI.

How far in percentage terms should enough clues be available for the reader to be able to solve a cosy mystery? #writing #cosymystery.
