When I see posts like this, as much as I'm happy for Silksong fans and devs to finally get their beloved game released soon, I can't help but feel furious about this bullshit tactic of "shadowdrops" like Hades 2 did last year, causing mayhem in the already troubled indie scene.

The artistic freedom of game developers is fundamental to games as a cultural medium. Any restrictions improsed by payment service providers or games platforms must not exceed the legal limits. In Germany, thanks in part to the USK, clear, binding and established rules apply that must be adhered to. Furthermore, creative forms of expressions or certain themes in games, such as diversity, must not be targeted by individual interests or campaigns from particularly vocal groups, as is currently observed on Steam or itch.io. The terms and conditions of global payment service providers such as Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal must not conflict with European values such as freedom of expression or artistic freedom. We therefore call on the companies involved to design their rules and offerings in a manner that ensures complicance with applicable laws and prevents overblocking. This is one of the best ideas I've heard in ages.

A PayPal call center supervisor said they actually completely agree with me. They said that if enough people call PayPal they would be forced to take notice. I explained the Patreon/Itch/Steam situation and they said they're a creative themselves & that they hope the situation improves.

blue prince, a "solo dev" game, has like 20 times more people in its credits than comprise the entire itch staff i'm pretty sure

they do not have a team of staff dedicated to posting. that is roughly like if you, personally, had a team of staff dedicated to posting

saw someone refer to "itch's social-media team" and i guess people are still not grasping the size of organization here

i am 90% sure the itch twitter/bluesky are run by the CEO, who is also the guy who wrote the website and continues to write the website

I can't escape the conclusion that we've ceded the entire public discourse about art to outrage merchants and algorithms and this is the result. Massive audiences addicted to passively consuming frictionless media while eagerly waiting to be told which title it's en vogue to hate next.

Listen, I might not be a NSFW artist or gamedev making NSFW games. I might not be interested in anything of this either. Hell, I might never be able to make a single full game at all.

visa and mastercard deciding what games are allowed to be sold is an apocalyptic level threat to the games industry. phone calls are the highest impact way to help.

this is an all hands on deck situation. the enemy got results with 1000 phone calls.
