USS Kearny in Reykjavik harbour, Iceland, on 19th October 1941 with fellow Gleaves-Class destroyer USS Mommsen moored alongside. The torpedo damage amidships is clearly visible. 17th October 1941. While escorting an Atlantic convoy, and having made multiple depth charge attacks on U-Boats the previous night, the destroyer USS Kearny was hit by a single torpedo. 11 of her crew were killed and 22 injured, but she was able to limp into Iceland at 10 knots.
