Synchrotron structural biology at SSRL, the beginning and beyond It has been 50 years since the publication in PNAS of our first results on the utilization and demonstrated benefits of synchrotron radiation for macromolecular crystallography. In this brief article, I offer some personal observations and comments about that early research at Stanford and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Project (SSRP, later renamed SSRL), how it evolved, and consider key factors in how and why synchrotron radiation ultimately catalyzed a new and transformational paradigm for study of the structure of biomolecules.

Acta Cryst. Section B: Structural Science, Crystal Engineering and Materials is pleased to announce the commissioning of a Special Issue dedicated to Crystal Growth and Related Characterization. This follows the introduction of the journal’s Crystal Growth section in 2021 and reflects our continued commitment to advancing research in this area.

We invite researchers to contribute original work on all aspects of crystal growth involving non-biological small molecules and extended organic, inorganic or hybrid materials. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

β€’ Crystal growth mechanisms
β€’ Melting, sublimation, and dissolution behavior
β€’ Control of morphology, size, and polymorphism
β€’ Intermolecular interactions and the assembly of extended structures
β€’ Structural characterization via diffraction or atomic-scale imaging
β€’ Growth techniques accompanied by a clear crystallographic or structural analysis

Submission deadline: 15 December 2025
All manuscripts will undergo standard peer review.
Edited by Matias Velazquez (SIMaP, France), Geetha Balakrishnan (University of Warwick, UK) and Tatyana Bekker (Novosibirsk State University, Russia)
The Special Issue will be published as a virtual collection on 30 April 2026.

Solving molecular organic crystal structures from powders Powder diffraction is a widespread technique found in academic, forensic, industrial research and quality-control laboratories the world over. The recent article by Kabova et al. [(2025), Acta Cryst. C81, 559–569] provides step-by-step guidance on how to proceed and the software the authors use, from sample preparation and the powder diffraction measurement itself, to the verification of the final structure.
