Homo sapiens-specific evolution unveiled by ancient southern African genomes - Nature The genomes of 28 ancient southern African individuals dated to between 10,200 and 150 years before present offer insights into the evolution of Homo sapiens.

Our new ancient DNA paper has just been published!
We present 28 new genomes from southern Africa - several of them high-coverage whole genomes.
Exciting to be moving towards population-level representation of ancient southern African genetic diversity!

During the earliest stages of domestication, dogs in archaeological sites would be indistinguishable from wolves.

Unless you find them on a small island where no wolves would survive on their own, eating things wolves normally don’t eat.

We are recruiting!

If you like evolutionary biology, microbial genomics, and host-pathogen interactions we have a PhD opening at @ugiatucl.bsky.social using population-scale metagenomics to map global phage diversity and uncover evolutionary signatures that could point to new antimicrobials.

🚨 Reminder to send in your abstracts for the palaeogenomics conference in Stockholm! 🧬🦠🐕💃🏼

If your results are still preliminary, my tip is to keep the abstract broad rather than skip submitting altogether 😉

See the post below for the price estimate and looking forward to seeing you there 🥳! #aDNA

Paleogenomics Reveals a Loss of Bovine Lineages in Mid-latitude Asia Over the Last 200,000 Years Abstract. Bovines have a complex yet poorly understood evolutionary history that is characterized by admixture and diversity loss during the Late Pleistoce

Briefly, we identified three extinct mitochondrial bovine lineages in mid-latitude Asia: aurochs basal to haplogroup C, bison clade X, and a previously unknown yak-like clade X sister to all known yak diversity.

This yak X mitochondrial lineage diverged around 675,000 years ago from modern yak!

That's So Last Season: Unraveling the Genomic Consequences of Fur Farming in Arctic Foxes (Vulpes lagopus) Humans have relied on animal fur for centuries, yet fur farming only began recently during the mid-19th Century. Little is known about this incipient domestication or the genomic processes involved. ...

New study on arctic fox genomics shows strong effects of fur farming: reduced diversity, inbreeding, and coastal origins linked to Icelandic foxes. A reminder that domestication leaves deep genetic footprints.
