Associate Professor, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. I like things that fly through the air (not shit hitting fan though), science, nature, pottery, and well, many things actually. Opinions are my own and probably questionable.

This is so cool! I had an amazing undergraduate student right after I started my job, and his research project included looking at the 1842 eruption. We concluded it was not just a phreatic event, but a bit more exciting. I wish this letter had been available then.

Hunga TongaโHunga Haสปapai eruption and the ice ring
Eruption of the Hunga TongaโHunga Haสปapai in 2022 was a unique phreatic eruption even where we can learn many things on the effects of explosive eruptions on the Earth system.
Eruption was so large that in the atmosphere formed transient ice ring.

My favourite erratic I stumbled across, split and balanced and huge. Just casually resting against the slopes of Hawk Mountain. The Athabasca river flowing east to the left and some old burn scars across the valley - not from last yearโs devastating fires.
Some beauty erratics, including a few odd lithologies such as this metamorphic rock - a schist that had to have been brought over the continental divide from BC and outside of the Rockies. Cool! The ice was BIG.
A lovely little Gog Fm Quartzite erratic on the ridge of Cinquefoil mountain.
#fieldworkfriday! Early June was steep hikes in Jasper National Park looking for erratics. The Canadian Rockies are truly astounding.
