So impressed with what Ss came up with in #mathtoday. In a group of 3, they had to create an original word problem to do with percentages, they wrote them on their vertical whiteboards and then circulated and answered other groups’ questions. #iteachmath

I haven’t read it yet, but I have a book on the history of mathematics on my shelf.. I’m excited to read it and to be able to share the history with my students. Sounds like it helped bring the concept to life for you, hopefully could do the same for others. Thanks for the great idea!

So good to remember this as a teacher! It seems to me like this is done most at the younger, elementary ages, have you seen examples of it done well in older grades, and if so what does it look like?

For example, telling the story of my mum’s first snowboarding adventure when introducing slope. Using a story about a pirate burying treasure to introduce a word problem. Exploring math in current events…

I’m enjoying exploring maththroughstories.org. I’ve Taught math using story for years and love it, but it seems much less used in MS/HS. I find engagement so much greater when I tell a story around a math problem. Thoughts? Do you have any great stories that become good math problems? #iTeachMath

Mm, yeah help them to see the point of the concept, eh? For the curiosity piece, I love spinning a story around a problem that, by the time I get around to posing the question, they are invested and can’t help but want to solve 😂
