And if you’re wondering “Why is there a blob in the back?” Well, that’s where the first woman president was supposed to go. More than a century later, it remains unsculpted.

You can’t expect public understanding of science — and things like vaccines — to thrive if you won’t support science communication!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🧪

Yes. I had a science colleague telling his grad he should not spend so much time on reading for my class (which was a required one) but do stuff in his lab. It's not just the students, sadly.

Nothing more challenging than a person excluded and put through the ringer while initially trying to play the game only to realize: hey, no matter what one does, there's no getting into the club - one thus may as well say it out loud and point at the naked emperor.

YOU GO. It's rubbed off on me. 🙏

@samknightwrites.bsky.social in an essay around @brookenewman.bsky.social's book: "In a way, the conservative reaction to Newman’s book has mirrored the official response to Andrew’s involvement in the life of Jeffrey Epstein. It is to insist on the distinction between the individual and the Crown."

... there is more than gaze admiringly. Make sure the people who commit these atrocities are handled. Called out. Judged. And put in a situation that stops this from being repeated, over and over again.

(I wish I had met her... Her thinking was so sharp and very original. Despite my polemics in the essay, though - I actually still love Feyerabend.)

I am currently just seeing a lot of achievements of women in philosophy/science being rolled back. -- Even though the in-club politics has never been made so public. -- It is disillusioning.

Start with my linked essay (please, I mean it - and I linked it for a reason). It is short enough and well written, even though written by another woman --... sorry could not resist... -- gives background to Hesse's thinking, and mentions her key work "Models and Analogies in Science."

I have strong views. Good I'm not at IU Cogs now:

"Epstein also tells Bannon that he helped fund the Santa Fe Institute, a New Mexico research operation, in part to advance his interest in “genetic algorithms”, which he can hardly describe. “Complex systems are complex, by definition,” he says."

Importantly, I don’t think these academics were an aberration. I think a lot of scientists would have entered these circles, given the option.
