As @lastweektonight.com would say, it's been a busy week. I presented "Parenting a Child with a Disability: Navigating Economics, Policy, and Motherhood in a Neoliberal Landscape" @iamasmotherscholar.bsky.social conference on Thursday & will be speaking to a parent advocacy org this week. #Grateful

I appreciated this opportunity to discuss some of the more complicated aspects of writing my book, including cultural expectations that, for a while, made me feel as though I needed "permission" to speak/write my experiences. www.theindieview.com/2025/05/12/i...

Just saw EEPHUS, and it was fantastic. This film does so much with so littleβ€”layers and layers of human complexity on that ball field. My favorite kind of storytelling.

β€œYou don't need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don't need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as you're not obstructing traffic or access to buildings.
When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including federal buildings and the police. If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries. If you get stopped by the police, ask if you're free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away.If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present. If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement office at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that you’ll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney β€” no matter your citizenship or immigration status.”

If you’re protesting this weekend, know your rights.

I just finished my first radio interview. A bit nerve-wracking, but it went well. I've spent many years promoting others' work to generate interest in and support of research/causes meaningful to them, and it's so exciting to now have the opportunity to discuss my own work & mission. #bookpromotion

I definitely relate to having "many wildly different ideas in my head" at 3 am. Like @mattkelland.bsky.social, I read widely, but I specifically lean toward nonfiction in all its forms. I've come to think of myself as an independent scholar as much as a writer, but no one's getting rich from that. πŸ˜†

β€œWords... They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos.... I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. " ~ Tom Stoppard

Appreciate this post having gone through the process recently. For transparency, I made 13 requests to people I'd had previous contact with at conferences, alma mater, etc. 5 of those were willing to read/blurb my book. Not sure how this compares w/other debut authors, but I'm happy w/that response.

Totally empathize -- It was a serious victory for me when I reached the Acknowledgements page of my final proof. You'll get there! Good luck!
