Day 3, Soft. Soft agar is used to visualise phages - plaque assay: bacteria infected with phages are mixed with soft agar, poured over an agar plate. A bacterial lawn grows & plaques appear - as phages infect bacteria, multiply, kill & repeat to form an expanding hole. #drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky

My hand posed palm down with my fingernails facing the camera. All the nails are at least partially visible. The middle and ring finger nails have a green (velvet magnetic) background with fluid art bacteria. The other nails are the inverse of this. On all nails the bacteria are outlined in white and flagellae have been painted on one end of each.

It's National Bison Day! Bison were abundant in the Bluegrass prior to European settlement, probably the largest population east of the Mississippi, and had a key role in creating the Bluegrass woodland pasture ecosystem. This, minus the fences, are what the Bluegrass looked like before 1780.
