-- on the plus side, now I've got a couple more pieces of kit in my arsenal: a bootable Ubuntu USB, and a custom brute-forcer.

It took two runs and a bit of help from an LLM, but the brute forcer worked and I was able to successfully recover my locked LUKS partition.

Might've been a rookie mistake, but hacking my own laptop to regain access feels like the perfect start to my #RoadToDEFCON

The way I see it, I have two choices:

Wipe the drive and start over, invalidating a few days worth of work which I can probably re-create in an evening or two.
OR
Boot to a USB and script out a brute-forcer, essentially hacking into my own laptop to regain control.

I know which sounds more fun!

Encrypted my primary OS partitions with LUKS and forgot the passphrase. Luckily, I have a good idea of what it might have been - I know what naming conventions I usually use and what special characters I use or substitute most often.
