๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 30-something Kind of a dev I mostly post about random old stuff I restore or just repair, such as mechanical cameras, typewriters, audio equipment, or computers. Usually going through phases, currently: Cameras/Photography. I also read a lot.

I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild, just some audiobooks online but the audio quality must be absolute trash (... Then again, when playing them with a shitty CDS system you probably wouldn't notice the bonus awfulness - there are _acceptable_ ones but the one I have isn't one of them)

What a neat way for a government to find out what person is looking up what kind of information. Sure it has massive potential for abuse and all that, but at least little Bobby can't look up tits in the encyclopedia anymore

What you need is a compact Dual 300 4-speed dual-needle player made in Germanyโ˜๏ธ

(just kidding, the friction wheel thing sucks soo bad - to illustrate: bsky.app/profile/ex.t.... Also I'm pretty sure the crystal pickup in there would sound terrible in case I ever finish actually repairing the thing)

The Rhine is this river that bisects Cologne in the middle (yes, both sides trash talk the other) and goes from the Alps all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Usually filled with transport ships but it can look nice sometimes

12.08.2025 08:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

(also minor addition: That really is _legend_ - there was quite a bit of distance between this tower and the Rhine even back then, and the torture-prison-stuff mostly happened in nearby buildings, not in the tower. It was probably just a watch tower.
Still no fun place for prisoners though)

In other words, medieval Cologne wasn't a great place for prisoners.

12.08.2025 07:13 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The gist of it (according to legend): Prisoners were basically starved in that tower, but the guards hung a piece of bread from the ceiling. If a prisoner would try to jump towards it, a trap door filled with blades (like a veggie dicer) would open and sliced-up prisoner would fall into the Rhine

Weckschnapp โ€“ Wikipedia

So, I was curious if that thing is notable: That tower is called "Weckschnapp", built some time before 1446 and the name roughly translates to "Take away" - because it was used for
*drumroll*
Killing people, in a really creative way. There's a German wiki article: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wecksch...

Assuming Minolta X-500 though, it's always the X-500. I repaired and test-shot soooo many cameras over the years but 90% of my photographs were done with it.
It's so nice, and it takes M42 lenses with an adapter too - Minolta my beloved ๐Ÿซถ

The negative is a bit of a mystery - it's Agfa APX 100 but I found it between sheets of negative-organizer-paper-thingies and have no idea when I took it (winter though, judging by the trees) and with what camera - probably a long lens judging by the perspective but that doesn't narrow it down

Cologne is a fun place, architecture-wise. Take a 2000+ year old city, bomb it a couple of times and you end up with an uh... "eclectic mix" of buildings.

Now all we need are crypto-trader testimonial bots that praise some dude who has all the trading secrets

(ah, brain fart: it's not necessarily the rounded parts that are hard with a feather, it's the line variation. With a feather you can pretty much only go broad or thin depending on angle while more modern fonts could utilize the flex in pen nibs to do these smooth transitions)

Table of a few letters written in different scripts, going from modern on the left to Gothic/Textur, Rotunda, Schwabacher and Fraktur in that order

Also re: typefaces: the "S" used in "Save" is a good indicator, you can see how it was "designed" to be written with very old tools like feathers that couldn't really do round strokes very well but also look far more ornamental. Compare that Textura/Gothic S to the S in Fraktur for example:

It looks like a dog whistle on that frequency, mostly based on previous symbolism and because right wing extremists love using crusader-chic as a masquerade (including the "save the occident" shtick), although I do find it interesting they went for a medieval script rather than something "modern"

They don't even know their Nazi font-lore, the Fรผhrers favorite font was Antiqua ffs

10.08.2025 23:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 24    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

That's Gothic actually, the Gutenberg bible was written in that - but I'm 99% certain they wanted it to look Nazi-esque and don't even know that the Nazis didn't actually like Fraktur (which is more commonly associated with them). Nazis favored Antiqua

Originally to avoid the forced memes Marvel loves to shove into their movies, but it also keeps the weird discussions away
