I think if people are so invested, debating rarely works. The believer uses confirmation bias to double down and find excuses or projections rather than change their beliefs. Sometimes bystanders or 3rd parties might re-assess based on what they hear/overhear in a debate.

One of the effects of fascism, cultism etc is that rules are thrown out the window. There are no clear, universal guidelines to follow, laws and regulations are ignored, logic is turned on its head. Such chaos.
