It's definitely a film that will stick with me for a bit. Kristen Stewart was great in this as well, just the small gestures to add extra inferences - excellent stuff.
Personal Shopper - 3.5 stars Bring Her Back - 4.5 stars
Happy #LetterboxdFriday
Another two this week.
Personal Shopper - A ghost story for the modern age that deals with grief in a really effective way.
Bring Her Back - Another horror that deals with grief, but also abusive relationships and faulty childcare systems. This actively makes you squirm.
Well, I bloody loved this! Shot into my top three UK releases of the year so far! #FilmSkyπ₯

A white curtain covers two thirds of the image from the left. In the right side is a brunette woman sitting down in a silver dress. She is putting on a shoe.
A ghost story for the modern age and the impact that grief can impact you in your day to say lives. The twist towards the end can be seen from a mile off, but I don't see that as the point, so didn't hinder it too much. I tired a bit of the text conversations, but enough to frustrate me.

Book 35 - The Return by Dulce Maria Cardoso
Combining a coming of age story with a historical narrative of those living in Angola prior to independence coming back to Portugal. It shows a country in flux and those who have come back trying to deal with the situation.

Yeah definitely! I wasn't far off the main river drag and came across a family run seafood restaurant, which was incredible!
Just love the crossroads that open to like four different places to eat/drink. Loved the place!
A francesinha - ham, steak and cheese in a sandwich with a fried egg on top with a beer and tomato sauce
Finally, happened to get a francesinha where Anthony Bourdain previously ate. It may not look appetising, but it was banging!

GuimarΓ£es - the birthplace of Portugal. A really pretty city centre. Obviously had to go to the castle!

Porto is such a vibe! Absolutely adored this city!

Some books I buddy read with people, so have a running discussion on what we've read. Overall, I'm pretty good at remembering what I've read to review appropriately.

Multicoloured orbs and space like images
Book 34 - Orbital by Samantha Harvey
A love letter to the world that we inhabit, from the vast beauty to the destructive forces. It tackles human nature and where do we call home and who is your family? This book is pure vibes however, so don't expect any sort of narrative in this.
A version of the US flag, but the stripes are in zig zaggy lines across
Book 33 - The Man in the High Castle by Philip K Dick
A book that focuses on what would happen if Nazi Germany and Japan had WW2. It's an ideas book, as you see the lives of people in a divided US deal with the regimes and politics. Struggled to latch onto characters in this.

A black background with a red bird flying spots of yellow around the cover
Book 32 - The Parable of the Talents by Octavia E Butler
This was a far more harrowing read than the Parable of the Sower, as it explores religion used a tool for politicians, to suppress any opposition. Still enthused with hope and resiliency, this Duology has become a favourite.

The Sugarland Express - 3 stars Phantom of the Paradise - 4 stars
Happy #LetterboxdFriday
Just the two this week.
The Sugarland Express - Spielberg's directorial debut. Moments of things to come from the director, though the middle part lagged.
Phantom of the Paradise - This was a ton of fun! Phantom of the Opera meets Faust meets 70s Rock.
Well 1974 ended up being a pretty great year for the films I managed to watch. My ranking of which is below.

Faust + Phantom of the Opera + 70s Rock all combine for a camp, kitsch film. Needless to say, I absolutely loved it! It's no Scarface or Carlito's Way, but tell me Brian de Palma doesn't have directorial range!
