Most Anticipated LGBTQ+ Young Adult Fiction: July-December 2025 After We Burned by Marieke Nijkamp (July 1st) A terrible accident. A horrible loss. A regrettable tragedy. That's all anyone in Fenix can talk about when a fire consumes the local high school, taking the life of a student. The town mourns, except who really knew―let alone cared about―Eden when she was alive? And why was she in the building that night?

If you hate everyone, eat a snack.
If you think everyone hates you, take a nap.
If you hate yourself, take a shower.

If you hate your book, maybe it's time for an editing break 💙👀

To clarify: 4 color = any book printing with full color interiors ie picture books, graphic novels, that kind of thing. 1 color books are anything with black (ie 1 color) text like a novel (even with a full color jacket/cover, it’s still considered a 1c book), and are typically printing domestic.

This sounds super scary & yes part of it IS, but not ALL books print overseas—ONLY 4 color books. & publishers aren’t passively accepting tariffs. They’re doing all they can to minimize the costs on anything that does ship from China. So yes it’s scary & bad, but authors shouldn’t feel hopeless!

Working in publishing is forgetting the word “BISAC” & being so annoyed bc no it’s not “keywords,” it’s the other thing…WHICH I SHOULD KNOW.

Luckily I remembered a few minutes later but oof that was annoying. Like pre-google days bc I couldn’t even figure out what to search to help me remember 😆

…and so no matter what does or doesn’t happen with this new book, it won’t be my debut, yet everything before this was written in the mindset of “maybe THIS will be my debut???” And suddenly things have shifted, which is very cool but also still very strange and new. 4/4

…but while NYTLS has my heart in one way, this new book has my heart in another way, and I’m so excited to see where it goes from here.

Drafting this book has been an interesting experience because it’s the first thing I’ve written since getting a book deal… 3/4

This book has a long way to go—and ah, a couple thousand words to cut—but editing is the easy part for me.

It’s always daunting starting a new story after pouring yourself into the last one, and at the beginning, part of me always wonders if I’ll like the next one as much… 2/4

And with that, the draft of my new YA romcom is done—phew! 92k words in a month (I mean, *close* to a month. Technically started 1/31 & February was short…but hey! Math is for my day job). My brain is a bit 🫠 but I’m happy to have it down on paper! 1/4

So ace/aro relationships can work all sorts of ways, they’re just going to be a little different than what people typically think of as a “relationship,” but with equally meaningful connections & love for someone as any other relationship. It’s hard to sum up in a short space—there are so many ways!

01.03.2025 14:30 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Well, it’s a spectrum so there’s no one answer. But my book explores the “requirements” we think of for a relationship & the different types of love that are often overlooked in the mainstream view of “romantic love,” & queer platonic relationships/how there are many different ways to love.

Me with like, both main characters in my debut book oops…One particular unintentional character trait was a whole ~thing~

Maybe I’ll talk more about it one day but it took an author friend being like “is this character…?” and me being like “um he wasn’t supposed to be but I guess he is…?”

1:30am is NOT the time to be coming up with new WIP ideas, especially when I’m taking a three day weekend to finish the draft of my current ms which will be presented to my editor as a potential book two…and yet here we are. 🙃
