too fast, too bright,
a live wire under the ribs.

Between abdomen and heart
a hard, shining point tightens —
like moonlight caught on a thorn,
cold and unrelenting.

Breath thins
the way fog thins the forest,
smoke slipping between dark branches

Still Life with Stingray Taken beneath the fish’s cartilaginous wings; an unloved sextant in need of repair, apparel caked in rime, jetsam from the water’s swell, flotsam in the surf, perforated swaths of sail, the late captain’s bell that can no longer ring, the sea swollen beads from a Rosary, cracked parts of a masthead, a bottle of swill and an eclectic smattering of sunken trinkets realize new lives through still life as bits and bobs bogged by abundant limpets. And yet this table cannot be said to be dressed unless a stingray has been highlighted in some way. But still this table cannot count as set until a stingray has been planted and aesthetically displayed. Skate fills out the table, granting credence to the artist’s aquatic bent. Apparent allegories get phoned in. The piece’s design deigns to drudge up trash that would have otherwise been sent to Davey Jones.
