Adding more signs of how NIH science is/was broken: my lab team could not show up for 3 more accepted talks at scientific conferences, totaling 9 for the year now. If you interview current NIH trainees for grad or med schools please understand that we are giving them the best experience we can.

I think it was you that mentioned that awhile back so I tried that number but still no voicemail. Maybe my number was on some sort of auto disconnect list

I haven’t gotten a voicemail option when calling him very early on this year

As a followup our administrative assistant reached out to Aquaneering and it seems there webstore is wonky and we can actually get it for only $40 shipping if we order through them via phone/e-mail rather than use the webstore.

I was going to order a new UV bulb for my fish rack from Aquaneering and it looks like the shipping alone is going to be $212. I don't know how universal UV bulbs are if I could order it from some other random source to get around this. Do others know? #zebrafish

There were lots of hot takes after the last election, some of which were pretty stupid, I think you look at both elections the real takeaway is if voters are unhappy they are going to vote for the other guys, so the key to winning elections is doing things to make voters happy. What a crazy idea.

I live in a swing district in a swing state. Democrats won every race they were in... Our two Republican incumbent township supervisors...replaced with Democrats, 3 Democrats and 2 Republicans had terms ending on the County Council...5 Democrats won. Judicial races at all levels...the Democrats won.

I actually voted by mail weeks ago, but they mail you a sticker with your ballot here.

So also lots of late nights running extension cords, setting up portable ACs, and moving stuff to the one fridge we have in the building on backup power. We intentionally shutdown power for a day each year and also lose it a lot. I think the record was 8 times in a year.

The electrical panel to put stuff on our generator is full and somehow this has been an unsurmountable problem since I got here back in 2017, so thankfully my fish system is on, but no HVAC, fridges, freezers, rotifer stuff, incubator, etc.

Don’t love that are campus power issues are such that now when I type “the power is out on campus” I my phone autofills with AGAIN

Its almost as if the world maybe will not be a better place as we increasingly outsource things to AI...

Also as some PUI specific advice, make sure your application is tailored to a PUI, when I've been on search committees I've seen a lot of R1 sounding applications be tossed. Make it clear you know the environment you are applying to and have a plan to be successful in that environment.

I fell off a horse in grad school $30,000 hospital bill while I was making less than that a year. Thankfully with my grad student health insurance I only needed to pay a manageable $60 out of pocket

See sooooooooooooo much barberry when out hiking, it breaks my heart. Had a 5-6 foot bush at my house, planted before I moved in, I yanked it and have not missed it for a minute.
