Start of a rash of 50ths perhaps - I launched a cycling group offshoot of Greenwich Friends of the Earth with a meeting mid-November 1976 but it was just me really, not sure it counts for @greenwichcyclists.bsky.social start date! Have a good celebration in Islington.

Christmas 1978 issue of Daily Cyclist, with some soggy cyclists.
Seven filing boxes of LCC magazines and a stack of the current quarterly publication - Henri the handlebar hound poses with one.
A little bookshelf tidy prompted putting my complete collection of London Cycling Campaign @londoncycling.bsky.social magazines into filing boxes. Henri wanted to join in (also coming from LCC after all) - both he and the first issue are looking a bit tired, dog-eared even?

With leaf fall well underway & twigs/branches from storm damage lying near the edge of the road itโs time to remind drivers that bike users will be taking the lanes.
This is national #roadsafety week but our road safety agencies are silent on this hazard.

As I lived in Eltham, inner tubes and front lights came from a small cycle shop in Avery Hill. Anything more serious meant a trip to Woolwich (couple of shops?) or Lee Green. Somehow I got a pranged 5 speed to Woolwich for new front forks, perhaps strapped up to my trusty Hercules Balmoral!

The running time may be offputting but the way the music has been weaved in gives it momentum (and pleasure in amongst the politics). Comfy seating in Malvern Theatre's cinema also helped! Highly recommended.

"Wherever your new home is, you should be able to go out the front door, and know that there are local amenities to walk to and turn up and go public transport available that connects you to a whole network of destinations. What our report found was that the current planning system is simply not delivering this vision. We need to bring the planning of new homes and sustainable transport together to create places that give people genuine choice about how they travel.โ - Steve Chambers, Sustainable Transport Campaigner at Transport for New Homes

Rural Idyll
Cycling for transport is often seen as an urban solution, but it can solve some of our rural transport issues too. So, what are some of the issues in our rural places? Motoring has subsumed the roaโฆ
In our first blog post of 2025, we take a look at how we can better plan for cycling for transport in rural places and how this could deliver better outcomes for villages as places. We also look at three Dutch examples we can learn from.

๐ฒ๐ค Upscaling cargo bike sharing in cities
A new study by Lund University explores how cargo bike sharing can be upscaled and play a key role in urban mobility transitions - replacing motor vehicles. This shift can lower carbon emissions, reduce noise and air pollution, and free up urban space.

A screen grab of an article from Cambridge Cycle magazine on the topic of inclusive transport network design, and the importance of considering age, gender, access, and social equity.
Inclusive transport requires an empathetic approach; recognising users' varying needs dependent on age, gender, ability and income.
Planners often neglect these groups and outcomesโparticularly in relation to the 'invisible' social, health and mental well-being.
