The cover of Mutant 2. It shows a man, seemingly without mutations, wielding a gun and a rapier-style sword. On his side is a mutant fox (?) with a machine gun and a spear. Behind them we see a robot in the sand, and a tank, with a peculiar looking mutant firing a machine gun. In the sky there is something that looks like a helicopter. The box is labeled ”Mutant 2” with the taglines ”Head deeper into the forbidden zone” and ”A powerful expansion for the role-playing game Mutant”

#SwedishTTRPGs game 5. Mutant 2, published in 1986 by Äventyrsspel, was an expansion to the Mutant game. A new class (the cryogenically frozen), a complex skill system, new mutations, hit zones, etc. More about ”Pyrisamfundet”, the Scandinavian mutant society. Scottish badgers! Giant pike!

Even the drivethrurpg blurb says ”As a role-playing game, this should be classified as unplayable”.

Somehow this just makes me more eager to get my hands on it.

The cover of Dungeons & Dragons, the 1986 Swedish edition, which looks just like the 1983 Basic Set (except for the text). It is a red box with a picture of warrior attacking a red dragon, painted by Larry Elmore. The game was called ”Dungeons & Dragons” in Swedish as well.

The first Swedish RPGs were all published by Äventyrsspel, but in 1986 Titan Games published a translation of Dungeons & Dragons (the 1983 Basic Set). The Expert rules were also published, but no later official #dungeonsanddragons editions have been published in Swedish.

The cover of the Chock tabletop RPG from 1985. It has an illustration of a man with a lantern and an old-timey handgun, perhaps in a graveyard. He is being watched by somebody with a hairy hand with clawlike nails.

#SwedishTTRPGs game 3.

Chock (1985) the Swedish translation of Chill (1st ed.) from Pacesetter Ltd (even has the same cover). #ChillRPG

A contemporary supernatural horror game with percentage based rolls (like BRP or CoC).

Cover of the first version of Mutant from 1984. It is an illustration by American artist Carl Lundgren, showing a man, armed with an iron bar, in front of round reflector with light beams coming out of it - possibly a heliograph. In the background there are three people coming out of what looks more like a jungle.

The second Swedish RPG hit the stores in 1984. Äventyrsspel's Mutant was a post-apocalyptic game with mutants, robots and talking mutated animals.

It was inspired by TSR's Gamma World (but in Scandinavia), and using Chaosium's BRP system.

Many versions followed.

Drakar och Demoner was never related to Dungeons & Dragons, but the ”DoD” has had many people confused.

The front cover of the 1982 Drakar och Demoner box. It has a person in full plate armour riding an airborne green dragon against a blue background. On the rocky ground there are three people - some sort of adventurers - and another person with pointy ears on a ledge. The illustration was by Len Ard and the distinct red logo uses a font called Mellissa Inline.

The first Swedish TTRPG (also my first TTRPG) was the 1982 ”blue box” edition of Drakar och Demoner published by Äventyrsspel.

It was an adapted translation of Chaosium's Basic Role-playing (BRP) rules and the Fantasy World part from ”Worlds of Wonder”.

Hi! I'm collecting stuff related to Swedish tabletop roleplaying games (Mörk Borg, Dragonbane, Mutant year zero, the Troubleshooters, etc.) on Bluesky, mainly on this feed: bsky.app/profile/did:...

If you have something you want to share, let me know!

Mutant Year Zero has rules for building ”the ark”, where the mutants can work on projects to develop it and increase the ”stats” (food supply, culture, technology, warfare). That's fun, but personally I don't like how the rules are written like this is the only story you're supposed to tell.
