AI Companies School Like Fish Markets for new AI use cases turn from blue oceans to red oceans in under 18 months. Start-ups need to go niche or have one helluva plan.

When a new use case arrives (chat, deep research, browsers), AI companies school like fish towards it. Blue oceans turn red in a year or so.

What can we learn from this pattern?

And thankfully, that song has less than 200k views in 3 weeks. Currently it's novel because it's AI, not because it's good. And that'll fade soon. I wrote about it a bit here: www.dbreunig.com/2025/07/25/a...

My hope is that this is similar to the "curation" buzz that occurred in the early 2010s, at the height of BoingBoing and Brain Pickings, where there was a bit of a push to treat bloggers who found stuff like artists. Thankfully, that never caught on.

I dislike this and hope it will pass. Every time someone waxes about AI creating content, I ask if they know how many songs were released on Spotify this week? Or bandcamp? How many comics were published just to Comixology? How many streaming episodes launched?

The problem is discovery.

An emergent trend I _hate_ is attributing a project to "China" in headlines and posts when talking about something a person or team built. It's maddening.

China did not ship a new LLM. China did not ship a new kind of GPU.

It is a tragedy of the commons situation.

To build these things well, you need funds. To get funds, you have to compete with the worst boosters.

There are bright spots (the team at Allen AI), but it's so cut-throat.
