And now if you get eaten by a bear youโ€™ve violated *two* rules.

I this came true several months ago already and I canโ€™t remember which sideโ€™s use of bots first necessitated the other sideโ€™s use of bots.

The two kinds of frustration

"I'm going to say this once and for all"
vs
"I'm going to say this as many times as I can to everyone who will listen"

Right, that's why there is a separate language selection for English (weird local variant).

Hilarious when you see the way they end up writing the web biscuit banners in the US though.

Thatโ€™s redundant, it already says English

If youโ€™re using Tailscale already, by far the shortest path is to just set your firewall to disable any connections that arenโ€™t over the Tailscale interface. Then you always get encrypted connections. The Tailscale overhead is no worse than TLS.

Iโ€™m actually not sure if this is good news or bad news, philosophically.

I feel like AI could be ironically helpful here, if prompted to look at each tweet and tell you whether itโ€™s intentionally misleading. But, if that got popular then theyโ€™d start tuning to trick the counter-AI.

If you teach people how to understand current media, media will search for a new way to make it dramatic again, like they do with all the dumb new weather prediction terms like snowpocalypse or whatever.

03.08.2025 20:16 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I donโ€™t think itโ€™s actual understanding so much as when you ask for warp 9 Scotty says she canna take much more oโ€™ this captain! in dramatic voice, but nobody thinks twice when asked for warp 6.

People react to cues. And back to the start of this thread: the media sends intentionally wrong cues.

People will never understand logarithms. A tiny little bar chart would be sufficient, except it would instantly defeat the purpose of exaggerating the news story for clicks because one of the bars would be height zero in the current example.

Disposable Code Is Here to Stay, but Durable Code Is What Runs the World Every day I seem to run into yet another post with someone solemnly opining that โ€œwriting code has never been the hardest part of software engineering. And hey, thatโ€™s smashing.

Disposable code is here to stay, but durable code is what runs the world, and it isn't going anywhere either. www.honeycomb.io/blog/disposa...

Unfortunately this was a miscommunication. The Tsunami Watch is actually just a new overfunded Android wearable

Awareness of your impending doom is overrated

Every stack already does that. We're just negotiating about the specific point where it gives up and needs human intervention, because no automation is 100% reliable.

And then, when the human intervention inevitably is required, whether well-tested observability and playbooks exist.

I planned my vacation around this claim

Agreed. Tailscale is ace. Before I tried it, setting up my own VPN sounded complex. Once I download Tailscale, it was unbelievably simple! I use it to avoid having to punch holes through firewalls.

Can I just repost the fact that I flipping love Tailscale? Since I last posted I've used it more and it continues to blow me away. It's the best VPN I've ever used and I doubt anything around really tops it.

It kinda makes all the other commercial VPNs seem kinda... Just awful. ๐Ÿคฃ

If your AI isnโ€™t reading your dashboard before it acts, is it really an AI?

Oh, so the algorithm has a name now? Time flies!

The one I wrote for bup actually does put it into a git repo so you can have the best of both worlds. Not really recommended here though. If the files are small and text, git packfiles are insanely tight.
