I agree also here, but even this is a double edge sword: setting a goal of "fixing bugs in X days" means that you have to stop doing whatever you are doing to fix even a 2px margin because it's filed as a bug... any outlier can destroy you're average metric.

the sooner you find any defect the better, bugs found by the team are good: add the test case, fix it, the client didn't even saw it, you now have better quality! but what is the metric for that then? they need a number to move up or down.

What works for me is fast feedback loops, I do TDD and we have CI, but then showing it asap to the PM or the customer or whoever can give you feedback so to be sure you did the right thing and also that they understand it and use it as you expected, and then as you said

and things along those lines of "you should have thought harder in ways it could go wrong", "program more defensively" or "this things should be raised in refinements" which to me is asking too much. Honestly, we know that doesn't work

I agree 100 percent with this, and people usually agree with "bugs found by customers cost money" but not with "finding bugs= good" (or even defects = better because they are before enabling the feature and closer to development) the response usually is "we should prevent bugs and defects"

What is that supposed to mean? I don't want to save anyone, just not to have unrealistic expectations and metrics that are easy to game and don't prevent the real headaches.
