This image shows the interior of the Extremely Large Telescope's (ELT) dome. The telescope structure, supported by struts, takes up most of the image in the centre, with some cranes around working. The gigantic doors of the dome are open, allowing sunlight to shine through.

A disc-shaped galaxy. It glows brightly at the centre and shines a faint white light all around it. The disc is made up of tightly-packed rings of dust, some darker and some lighter. Wide, long lanes of dark reddish dust cross the galaxy in front of its edge, blocking out some of its light; the long strands twist and break apart at each side. A couple of nearby stars and distant galaxies are also visible on the black background.

Hubble has captured the sharpest image yet of the lenticular galaxy NGC 7722 and its long, winding dust lanes!

We've never seen this level of detail, as the star's remains stream back out to interstellar space. Our Sun will look something like this 7 billion years from now. 🧪🔭
