To be fair, the journalist was probably the least compromised member of the group chat. Accidentally including him brought up the average security per participant, really.

It's shamelessness, lack of decency, lack of self-awareness, a broken psyche desperately hungry for ego reinforcement, will to power ... those are advantages in our system, adaptive qualities. That's what distinguishes the people in that chat, the people running things. They don't need to be smart.

This, I think, is what smart people have such trouble accepting: that morons can succeed perfectly well in US politics. When a GW Bush or a Trump rises all the way to the top, it doesn't mean they're secretly smart, it means our corrupt, desiccated system is defenseless against venal morons.
