When institutions rely on coded language, it isn’t always about hiding meaning.
Sometimes it’s about making sure the right people hear it, while everyone else is left arguing over whether it happened at all.
We heard the dog whistles in the recent Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad. “Great jeans” became “great genes,” a wink wrapped in her blond hair, her blue eyes, and even her initials, SS. What gets sold as “patriotic style” carries something sharper, echoes meant to remind who belongs, & who doesn’t

The caption contained exactly 14 words, with two capital H’s, a combination white supremacists use to signal “14/88,” with “HH” standing for “Heil Hitler.”
