Marshal was a historic American figure, internationally recognized botanist, farmer, miller, astronomer and master stone mason who lived in Pennsylvania. His home has been preserved as part of American history. The large oil painting is by artist Adrian Martinez.

My interest in Humphry Marshall led me to paint Marshall in his home, as well as meet the Friends of Martin Tavern whose mission is to preserve the story of Marshalltown and Marshall, who was a botanist, farmer, miller, astronomer and stone mason.

Against an off white backdrop, a woman with Afro hair style stands expressionless with hands behind her back while looking down to her right. She wears an all black pantsuit plus thin gold glasses and belt. On his first trip to Europe in 1966, Hendricks was struck by a portrait in the Uffizi gallery, in Florence, by the Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni Battista Moroni: “The figure in a black, skin-tight outfit made me see the illusion of form and simplicity in a different light.” Miss T was a “direct by-product” of this encounter with the four-hundred-year-old painting. Hendricks’s subject, Robin Taylor, was his then-girlfriend: “Several paintings come with good color besides what’s on their canvases. Robin (Miss T) scared the shit out of my mother when she told her, ‘If she couldn't have me, no one would.’”

Painted during a triumphant visit home from Paris in 1897, Henry Ossawa Tanner’s portrait of his mother is both a tribute to Sarah Tanner—the central, stabilizing figure in her large and distinguished African American family—and a celebration of her son’s recent success in his chosen career, in which he had persevered despite initial opposition from his parents. In its composition the work refers to a world-famous image by another American: James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother of 1871. Tanner’s portrait of his mother has none of the cool austerity of Whistler’s picture; instead it is an affectionate portrayal of a strong, sensitive, thoughtful personality.
