They really are locked in the 80s. It’s horrible to watch.

Starmer's speech was interesting for taking his most explicitly anti-Blairite, social democratic position since 2020. However a) nobody believes a word he says and b) the scale of the reforms is so inadequate to the crisis that he still comes off as not really understanding it.

Starmer has managed to unite in opposition Jeremy Corbyn, Nigel Farage, Zarah Sultana, Liz Truss, Owen Jones, the SNP, the Liberal Democrats, migrant advocacy and civil liberties groups, right libertarians, fascists, anarchists, socialists and your gran with her Doro dumbphone. Incredible work.

It's been a tumultuous time for the Labour Government at present - and Conference next weekend might be the last thing they want.

Compass members can join us LIVE at 6pm on Tuesday 23rd as we sit down with @rachaelmaskell.bsky.social MP and @jemgilbert.bsky.social to discuss what's next!

I'm actually not sure about that. Roy Hattersley was right-wing; Anthony Crosland was right-wing. These people are NOLS right-wingers – they're only on the Right in the sense that they've build a career on fighting the Left. Which, we can assume, appealed to them because they're horrible people.

16.09.2025 14:20 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Something to that tbh.

16.09.2025 14:25 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It's similar to that Helen Lewis post about middle aged male celebrities turning far right because of a mid life crisis. We have a political commentariat that sees politics wholly as gossip and personality, never as the structural interplay of social forces.

16.09.2025 09:13 β€” πŸ‘ 29    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

The fact that the Labour Right are the most horrible people in politics is about to become common knowledge, which is much better than it not being, but this will still be used to distract from the fact that the basic problem with them is being very right wing, rather than them being rude.

16.09.2025 08:48 β€” πŸ‘ 41    πŸ” 10    πŸ’¬ 4    πŸ“Œ 0

It's great how the media are prepping the ground for Starmer to have lost his job because of Peter Mandelson and nasty emails from staffers ten years ago, rather than because his entire political strategy has demonstrably failed by being far too right-wing.
