It’s routine nowadays to see guys with unimaginable wealth and power act more petty than the rest of us.

So the problem isn’t really about finding the right kind of expert to put in charge. It’s that concentrated power without accountability produces bad outcomes almost regardless of who holds it or how smart they are. The checks and balances that exist in mature democracies weren’t bureaucratic inefficiency — they were load-bearing. You find out they were load-bearing when they’re removed. What’s genuinely difficult is that the moment calls for both technical literacy and democratic accountability and long-horizon thinking and resistance to capture by concentrated wealth. That’s a high bar, and right now it’s hard to point to many places clearing it.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
