They also said manufacturers might not include eg circulation pumps in their measurement of electricity demand.

@trystanlea.bsky.social and @glynhudson.bsky.social make some interesting points here that HP makers probably use sensors that are good enough to run the heatpump but not as accurate as their sensors specโ€™d to provide measurements.

The 7kw vaillant heatpump at my old house averaged a (self reported) SCOP well above 4, which I thought was pretty good. But this one (a bigger 10 kw model) is reporting a running average of 6 so far! (Weโ€™ve only been heating with it 2-3 months, but Iโ€™m still impressed/skeptical).

Helping to power digital transformation
Australia is becoming a regional data centre hub, and a global leader for artificial intelligence (AI). We are helping to power digital transformation in the Asia Pacific and the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies scross broad sectors.

Our economy hosts an outsized AI industry, including over 1,100 private AI companies.
Adoption of AI is strong across society, with over 400 public firms developing or deploying AI solutions.
Our vibrant AI ecosystem and proximity to Asia means we are becoming a service provider for the region, with AI-related patents quadrupling over the past decade.
Sydney and Melbourne are both top-ten data centre markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
Australiaโ€™s abundance of renewable energy resources means we are a great location for regional, green data centres. This includes supplying Asia via subsea cables.
Australia aims to become a global leader in developing and adopting trusted, secure and responsible artificial intelligence, led by the National Artificial Intelligence Centre.

HEY FRIENDS!! Did you know that Australia - #2 in the world for data centre investment - is now formally missing its climate targets thanks in large part to the resulting surge in power demand?

It's massive news - @crikey.com.au let me NERD OUT to explain why:

Iโ€™ve read of (experimental?) retrofits where theyโ€™ve pumped the solum full of EPS beads and closed off the air bricks.

I guess itโ€™s usually not good to extend conditioned space with timber below the DPC.

and track the changes to heat loss and humidity as I go.

Definitely. The floor doesnโ€™t feel all that cold at these temperatures, but the draughts make the room feel a bit uncomfortable. What Iโ€™d like to do next is seal the rest of the ground floor from beneath with a VCL membrane before adding insulation, hopefully over this winter,

Very neat. I added tongue and groove woodfibre boards underneath the joists instead of the breather membrane, but it was pretty tricky and very time consuming, especially around pipework, and I probably wouldnโ€™t do it exactly like that again.

The kitchen floor insulation was definitely high effort, but even in this relatively mild weather (outside temperature 6-7ยฐC, thermostat temperature 18.5ยฐC) itโ€™s keeping the floor 3.5ยฐC warmer than the uninsulated dining room floor. #retrofit

Iโ€™ve had solar ~2.5 months now and the worst day so far came within 6 weeks of the best day, which generated 100x as much energy as the worst.

Yeah, I think so, turned on the preheat. Itโ€™s got warmer anyway though. Seems to bring it up to where it can charge at 4-5kW. I canโ€™t easily get to the battery to insulate it at the moment because weโ€™ve piled the garage with stuff while moving ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Unfortunately (we've still got lots of retrofitting to do) the heating just gobbles up energy, so the more I can get to run in the 15p/kWh periods, the better.

I havenโ€™t got the app running yet, but when I set it up like that via SensoComfort, it didnโ€™t recharge during the midday cheap period because the cylinder temp was still just high enough, and then it quickly ran out in the evening โ€œoffโ€ period. Iโ€™m trying out reducing the hysteresis from 5k to 3k..

02.12.2025 22:32 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

so what happens is you use hot water during off peak, run out at peak, and then it wonโ€™t reheat.

02.12.2025 20:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I thought the hot water time planner would do this - top up the cylinder during the planned times so it doesnโ€™t need to at peak time. But instead it will only reheat if the hot water runs out during the scheduled time,

02.12.2025 20:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Whatโ€™s the best way to set a Vaillant sensocomfort to do hot water cylinder reheats in the cheap periods of a TOU tariff? (Eg @octopus.energy Cosy).

The Economic Impact of Brexit Other

Still reeling from the Stanford report on Brexit. Reduced GDP by up to 8% and investment by as much as 18%. The UK Treasury would have ยฃ40 billion more each year if Britain had remained in the EU. Devastating self-immolation.

My plan was to use inditherm under my floor, which was available in the right size for my joists, but supply seems to have dried up, and if I have to cut Steico flex to size, thatโ€™ll be about 100 cuts just for the living roomโ€ฆ which is a bit daunting.

22.11.2025 16:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

How do you do the cutting? Iโ€™ve been using the Bahco insulation hand saws and a tape measure, which work well for small amounts, but Iโ€™d really like a more efficient system with some kind of jig to do things faster and more accurately.
