Live near Manchester (UK), work on citizen-led/co-op approaches to the energy transition as a way to tackle climate change. Interested in politics, urban design, anarchism, co-ops and football (not necessarily in that order).

Starmer could save face, find a universally unpopular scapegoat AND boost his own chances just by sacking Morgan Mcsweeney!

One way of telling the political story of the last ten years is of three wasted overall majorities.

A substantive majority in the Commons for a full term is the greatest prize the UK constitution can bestow on a PM, and three times in a row, it has been wasted by those prize-winners.

Captain Cook Square, Middlesbrough (1999), there's some great architecture in Boro, but this nineties development is utterly cursed.

I see James Watson died. So it's time for a science joke.
"What did Watson and Crick discover?"
"Rosalind Franklin's notes."
Good joke.

I was actually thinking something similar. Around the 2000s there was a narrative that we didn't have the resources or space for the clean energy generation necessary to maintain current lifestyles. I am not saying that's no longer the case, but I do wonder if it is.

China’s clean-energy revolution will reshape markets and politics The world’s biggest manufacturer now has an interest in the world decarbonising

The right's arguments against the clean energy transition make no sense in this context.

China is now making more money from exporting green technology than America makes from exporting fossil fuels.

The value of public R&D

πŸ’―. Got induction because of air quality inside our home and climate benefits, but now I like it so much better for cooking. Like, I don’t ever want a gas stove again. Ever.

Ah super interesting! Yeah, I'm in Glossop and a local archeologist here has a whole theory around various forts based on the fact this was border territory. See also the Nico Ditch as the border at one time: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico_Di...

But also! The UK's digital govt is really very good. If you want to put investment somewhere, give the money to the local authorities who are having to hollow out service provision and replace everything with Copilot. Finding new ways to justify Blair's pet project doesn't look strategic or strong.
