Another way to say these businesses are “erasing progress” is that they are re-segregating. The latter more pointedly gets at what’s at stake.

I talk about this a lot, but a big big change in gender relations was that today's middle aged women grew up *able to read what men were saying about them* in social spaces that they assumed women weren't present, but were (web forums, twitter etc).
