Spotted this beautifully hairy #owlfly (Acmonotus incusifer) this week.

One of the Split-eyed Owlflies, it seems this isn't a commonly observed species. There are only 5 observations in #inaturalist with all of those in Western Australia.

And here is my new favorite arachnid. She's a Solifugid, or wind scorpion, and is busy working on making a burrow for herself. When hunting, these animals move rapidly and tap their pedipalps on the ground to sense prey. #Arachtober

Small pink Caladenia variations near Monga, NSW. Smaller white forms here resemble C. alata but the pinker forms maybe look a bit more like C. hillmani - particularly plants with much larger flowers? C. hillmani is a coastal sp. so not exactly sure what is going on here at almost 1000m alt. #orchids

Pseudoscorpions are small arachnids that are often overlooked. They prey on clothes moth larvae, carpet beetle larvae, booklice, ants, mites, and small flies. Pseudoscorpions will sometimes hitch rides to new locations on other insects. #Arachtober

A few days ago I posted a dead yellow jacket which had become a community meal for Paratemnoides social pseudoscorpions, but I hadn't really considered that they are apparently capable of teaming up and catching a live one?? Checked on them later and the unfortunate wasp was deceased. Damn. 🧪

Saw a dead yellow jacket on oak bark this evening, noticed movement and looked closer, and there were little Paratemnoides pseudoscorpions grabby hands poking out of the shadows. Seems they brought home a Big Snack to share with the community (Paratemnoides are social pseudoscorpions 🤎) 🧪

Giving this one another run, since it's rainbow bee-eater season again. We only see them here during the warmer months.

Rob’s #BirdOfTheDay are #Grebes. So I thought I’d post this little #humbug of the Great Crested Grebe. It was behaving rather melodramatic trying to persuade its parent to let it piggyback. You can see its t-rex arms/wings sticking out. The parent didn’t fall for it. 🪶

A cute little young yellow-footed rock-wallaby sitting in a depression in the rocks as if it's a comfy seat while mum watches over with care. I watched this pair for an hour or more and mum was always nearby.

Here's one from 10 mins ago in the famous Staffordshire hide...

It’s fairly well known that the blue color of this fish is structural in nature🐟✨️

Most of a wolf spider, taken from directly above. The last segments of a few legs have been cut off by the frame. It is standing on holy salty sand, so the background looks like a solid slab of black specked beige. The spider is a mainly soft grey body with four black eyes showing. The abdomen is marked with a grey line and black rimmed blobs all over it. This made it incredibly hard to see if you weren't paying close attention. The legs are a more pinky white with diffuse black barring. If it was big enough people would be wearing the "pelt" as luxury coats. It's gorgeous.

The same spider taken from a low angle, looking at the face slightly angled. This shows the female palps and the entire set of 8 black eyes. It also showed how the spider was right up on its "toes" ready for a fast get-away (or maybe the blinding white salt was hot to stand on). There is a bit of a shadow from the intense sunlight. Spider description is on the other photo.

Sorry spider haters, but this was just the most beautiful beast & I knew (nearly everyone) would need to see it 😉. It sat frozen, up on its toes, on the edge of Leeman (WA) salt lake while I took pics. Unfortunately it was too big (body length 1.4cm) for my lens. #spider #Lycosidae #Tetralycosa

This is a shrimp that lives in association with a starfish 🦐
That said, it seems the shrimp is simply using the starfish as a home, the starfish doesn’t appear to get any particular benefit from it.

A tiny gray, brown, and tan striped spider with a pair of large forward facing eyes. It is standing on a piece of wood with a few grains of sand strewn about.

This teeny, tiny jumping spider can be found in Florida's long-leaf pine savannah habitat. The granules at the spider's feet are grains of sand. This is another fabulous spider introduced to me by @apsciencebylyn.bsky.social #Arachtober
