I don't know how we got to the same "don't use the words die, death, or kill" censorship standards that Fox Kids and Saban used in the 90s and I genuinely hate that we did.

can't say too much about it but i know for SURE because i have been told so that i have lost work and opportunities for being hard line anti-AI. this is not a fight we as translators can fight from the inside! we NEED customers to raise the stink about this shit because we literally cannot. PLEASE.

Unfortunately, it's not easy for pros working in manga (translators, letterers, editors) to speak up to the companies that employ them.

Why? Because speaking up will cost them their job.
Hell, I know freelancers who have lost work because they posted anti-AI sentiment on social media. (1/? ⬇️)

As I said in this article, ultimately it is readers who will be the deciding factor.

Shouting online DOES NOT MATTER. What matters is DO YOU READ THE MANGA? DO YOU BUY IT?

One of the most powerful phrases I've ever learned is "help me understand this."

This is a hard and important lesson to learn: approach people with curiosity, not with weapons drawn. I promise you, you'll learn more, you'll grow as a person, and you'll have a richer life for it.

Also as both a translator and editor, I'm begging my fellow translators not to neglect their creative writing skills. Even if you understand a source text, if you are not conveying it effectively in English (i.e. are delivering texts so literal they're unreadable), it's often barely better than MTL
