Thank you @kingjamesconf.bsky.social for hosting our panel on influential relationships - there is much more exploration to be done on James' relationships with his favourites, his adopted/surrogate families and teaching and reading James as a queer king.

Katherine Manners, daughter and heir of the 6th Earl, was also a proponent of memento mori, using skulls to support columns on the tomb that she commissioned in Westminster Abbey for her husband, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham in 1634, completed six years after his assassination.

Two sculpted figures of young boys [deceased] holding skulls. Located on the tomb of Francis Manners, 6th Earl of Rutland, in the Bottesford church.
Happy to be here! For my first post (on Halloween) I want to introduce two 17th century tombs πͺ¦ The first was erected for the 6th Earl of Rutland in Bottesford. It offers the unusual proclamation that his sons, who are sculpted holding skulls, were killed by "wicked practise and sorcerye" [witches].
