We're two weeks out from Virginia's election. Almost no state's electorate has realigned as much as Virginia's over the past decades. When Mark Warner won the 2001 Gov. election, he did so with a coalition that included the Western coal counties and Hampton Roads, but mostly lost NOVA. 1/x

Early map of the District of Columbia and tribal areas in navy ink on a white background. It appears to show the 1792 boundaries of Washington city, the District, and the Potomac and Anacostia rivers and where indigenous tribes live. It shows the Wacotchtank — an alternative spelling of the Nacotchtank residing in present-day Anacostia. The map also shows various indigenous quarries (Piney Branch, Rose Hill) in Northwest DC.

On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we honor the Native American communities who first called DC home, including the Nacotchtank, Piscataway, Powhatan, and Pamunkey peoples.

We pay tribute to their strength and ongoing contributions despite the painful injustices they have endured.

Yes, for sure: many Black middle class households began departing in the mid-late 60s.

In the previous tweet (tweet…? 🤷🏽‍♀️), I meant that - by the 90s/2000s - my relatives were attributing white flight to the ‘68 riots, despite having lived through the phenomenon in the 50s. Memory is interesting.

I heard that myth too, even from Black relatives who were DC residents then.

For the Right to the City exhibit @ Smithsonian Anacostia, we scanned yearbook pics from the Sumner School DCPS archives. Compare Sousa MS, East of the River, ‘55 v ‘60. Enforced school integration spurred DCs white flight

Relevant for today: these 1978 notes from my dad’s papers in the Carter Administration, assessing many Senators’ oppositions to extending DC voting representation in Congress: “too liberal, too Democratic, too Black, too urban.”

Rest in power Benito Flores, one of my most fearless teachers from the streets in the Los Angeles housing justice movement. His clear understanding of systemic injustice and his tenacity of spirit inspired countless people, and his death will not be in vain.

Feeling unexpectedly emotional while packing. A surreal moment to be moving away from the City of Angels. These books + this place have taught me so much.
