Suddenly it’s just one week until All the Way to the River hits shelves. I wrote this book for me, in memory of Rayya -- but also for all of us who have ever felt lost in love, lost in addiction, who realize one day that we no longer recognize ourselves, that we're wearing someone else's life.

In just a little under a month All the Way to the River will be released into the big, wide world. And with it, so many pieces of my heart, my soul, my Rayya will be in your hands. I can’t wait for you to hold this story with us 🙏🏻

ALL THE WAY TO THE RIVER is my new memoir and it tells the whole story, to the very best of my capacity. I think Rayya would have liked it. She really, really liked being intimate, honest, difficult, and important! Happy birthday, baby. You are still a wild ride.

It took me seven years after her death to finally be able to tell our story — not least of all because it took me that long to even understand all that happened between us over the course of our long peaceful friendship and our short and riotous romance.

I would tell you to rest in peace, but I know that you always found peace boring. May you rest in excitement.”

Rayya was . . . A LOT. Full of contradictions, powerful, giving, loving, demanding, and (even to this day) difficult for me to fully explain or comprehend.

“She was my love, my heart, my best friend, my rebel, my angel, my protector, my challenger, my partner, my muse, my wizard, my surprise, my comet, my liberator, my rock star, my absolutely impossible non-cooperator, my otherworldly spiritual visitor, and my baby. I loved you so much, Rayya.

Today would have been (still is? always will be? how does time even work?) Rayya’s birthday. On the day she died, back in 2018, I wrote this about her on social media:

“When serenity is either unavailable or unattainable, only drama and boredom will ever be on the menu.”
