A crosshatched pen and ink drawing. A moonlit landscape, empty except for a spindly tree with a single leaf, and a low flat stone. A bearded man in a large fur coat stands with his hands in his pockets and a strange, black creature wearing a striped scarf and sneakers sits on the stone. Neither looks happy. Below are the words "They wait and wait till things turn glum -- but Mister Gorey does not come"

Those who decry classical education. . . can hardly conceive the sense of strength and freedom which a young and ingenuous intellect acquires in all literature . . . (Frederic Farrar and the nectar sweets of classics)
