Meanwhile, here in Maine, AI crawlers have rendered the server that manages our statewide interlibrary loan unreachable by legitimate attempts to pass through requests/information
Again, but louder: the server canโt be reached by libraries and the folks trying to use them BECAUSE OF AI CRAWLERS.

Andrew Cuomo mangling a banger from one of the most famous athletes of all time: "Fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee"
Man, don't ruin lepidopterans and hemipterans like this, I don't want to think about your inability to remember one of the most famous bangers of all time every time I see a resin bee

I lived there 10+ years & left just a couple years before you arrived, but SAME. You tell your Midwestern folks you live there and they lose their minds. Meanwhile, I'm walking up to the farmers' market every Saturday morning, walking home from the bar on Fridays, etc.

The cover of author TJ Klune's novel 'In the Lives of Puppets' which shows a small red brick house on a forest floor, with elaborate treehouses built high above. It called to me as I browsed an aisle in the library looking for a different book (Miรฉville's The City & The City, which I haven't been able to start yet bc I am still processing this one, a day after finishing it). I did the flip-open-skim there in the library aisle and was immediately swept away. Beautiful, just beautiful.
Came across this tempting cover while browsing the library stacks. Didn't know the author, not usually drawn to sci-fi/fantasy, but friends--I was SMITTEN from page 1. Rapt. Laughing & sobbing & on tenterhooks, committed to these characters who now live in my heart. Cannot recommend enough. ๐

I say this in so much love
You are trying to make sense of it and thatโs the problem
You have to accept that Cuomo doesnโt want to be right. He wants to be humiliating and emasculating to a Brown man using the words and structures of a Black one
While respecting neither

I think about this all of the time. Life creates the conditions for life. The planet will go on just fine without us. We're the idiots who failed the survival of the species test.

Old pic of a tiny adorable flying squirrel hanging upside down on a wire mesh feeder on our deck, monching a seed with both hands. Grey/brown above, cream below, huge eyes. It looks incredibly soft and sleek.
Same brand of flying squirrel, photographed in mid-air. All limbs splayed, tail floofed out flat and acting as rudder, enormous eyes. This is a bat crossed with a small squirrel crossed with Batman crossed with the cutest stuffed animal you've ever seen. Its side "wings" extend just beyond its tiny little front paws, so it looks like it's holding its cape open as it soars through the air.
Adorable yes BUT NOT WHEN THEY ARE SWOOPING OUT OF THE TREES AT YOU IN THE DARK WITH ARMPIT FLAPS FULLY EXTENDED #FlyingSquirrel ๐ฟ
(Old photo bc I was too busy shrieking & fleeing to get a pic of this evening's visitor.)

I noticed that Horus does not leap out of his seat to stand in the aisle the absolute second the plane comes to a stop. A Very Good Doggo.

A closeup photo on dead leaves on the forest floor, where a brown, mottled, well-camouflaged frog, seen from above, looks at a tiny midge/gnat/fly which is in mid-flight right in front of the frog.
Rare photo of the dangerous initiation ceremony for all prospective new members of Fly Club. Despite catching the frog's attention, the tiny fly/midge escaped unharmed.
